The Best Tool to Design a Print Book Cover for KDP

The best tool to design a print book cover for KDP is one that builds the whole wrap (back cover, spine and front cover) at the exact size KDP expects for your trim size, page count and paper, so you are not stretching front-cover art over a blank template. BookCovers.pro does this: enter your trim size, final page count and paper stock, upload a front cover or create one with AI, and it calculates the spine width, 0.125-inch bleed, safety zones and the back-cover barcode area, then produces a KDP paperback wrap PDF and a KDP hardcover case-laminate PDF (for books of 76 pages or more). The same download also includes IngramSpark files, a Lulu paperback file (32 pages or more), an ebook cover and a square audiobook cover. Designing and previewing are free; downloading costs one credit, $24 for a single cover or as little as $11.29 a cover in a 100-pack, with no subscription.

Below: what a KDP print cover needs, how the main free and paid tools compare, and the steps in BookCovers.pro.

What a KDP print cover has to get right

A KDP paperback cover is one file that wraps around the book. Four things decide whether it fits:

  • Trim size. The width and height of one cover panel.
  • Spine width. Set by your page count and paper (white, cream or colour). A draft page count gives a draft spine.
  • Bleed. Artwork must run 0.125 inch past every trimmed edge.
  • Barcode area. KDP prints the ISBN barcode on the lower right of the back cover, so that corner must stay clear.

The tools authors use, and what each one does

BookCovers.pro. Builds the finished wrap for you. You supply the front image (yours or AI-made), the back-cover description and the spine text, and it lays them out at KDP's dimensions, with separate files for IngramSpark and Lulu. Best when you want a print-ready file in one session without layout work.

KDP Cover Creator. Amazon's free tool inside KDP title setup. According to KDP's help page (checked 3 November 2026), it uses the book details you entered, adds your ISBN to the barcode area, lets you pick a template and use KDP's image gallery or upload JPG, PNG or TIFF images, and asks you to upload and process your interior first because the spine depends on the page count. Best when a template layout suits your book and you only publish on KDP.

KDP's Print Cover Calculator and templates. Free. KDP says the calculator gives the exact dimensions of your cover and a downloadable PDF and PNG template to use as a guide layer in your own image-editing software (checked 3 November 2026). Best when you, or a designer, will lay out the cover by hand.

A general design app or a hired designer. Full creative control. You place the KDP template as a guide layer and build the back and spine yourself, or pay someone to.

Making a KDP cover in BookCovers.pro

  1. Enter the book details. Pick one of seven built-in trim sizes (5×8, 5.5×8.5, 6×9, 6.14×9.21, 7×10, 8.5×8.5 or 8.5×11), your final page count and your paper stock.
  1. Add the front cover. Upload a PNG, JPG or WebP you already have, or generate one with AI. Free accounts get three AI attempts per cover project (up to six AI actions a day); once you hold any credit, AI generations and refinements are unlimited.
  1. Build the back and spine. Add the description, an optional About the Author section with photo, and the spine text. Choose an AI background or a solid colour, or upload your own finished back cover.
  1. Check the proof. The proof shows trim, bleed and safety guides. If AI text runs too close to an edge, the Auto-fix button shrinks the design and fills the new edges.
  1. Download. One credit downloads the bundle, which is composed in about 5 to 20 seconds. Upload the KDP PDF on the Content tab and leave "my cover already includes a barcode" unchecked: KDP adds the barcode in the clear corner.

If the page count changes later, edit it under "Book info" and the templates are rebuilt. After your first download, the same cover project can be changed and downloaded again at no extra cost.

Good to know

Print files are high-resolution RGB PDFs and 300 dpi PNGs at the exact full-wrap size. BookCovers.pro does not promise a particular PDF/X standard or colour profile, and because printers' rules change it cannot guarantee every file passes every preflight, so check KDP's current requirements before you publish. Dust jackets with flaps and Lulu hardcovers are not supported yet, and there is no human designer on staff.
