Why each printer needs its own template
The spine width comes from the page count and the paper, and each printer uses its own paper thicknesses and rules. IngramSpark paperbacks, for example, use Ingram's own spine-width table for each paper type. A cover built for one printer can be a fraction of an inch off at another, so self-publishers who print with more than one company need one file per printer.
The printers' own free tools (checked 3 November 2026)
- Amazon KDP: Print Cover Calculator and templates. KDP says the calculator gives the exact dimensions of your cover, and you can download a PDF and PNG template to use as a guide layer in your image-editing software. KDP also offers Cover Creator, which builds a cover from its own templates inside title setup.
- IngramSpark: cover template generator. IngramSpark's file guidelines tell publishers to use its custom cover template generator, which emails a template after you fill in the fields. The same guidelines ask for 0.125-inch bleed, 300 ppi images, a CMYK colour space and a clear 1.75 by 1 inch area for the barcode.
- Lulu: Cover Tool. Lulu's Cover Tool guide describes a browser editor with starter templates, image, text and shape editing, an ISBN and barcode section, and a preview without guides before you finalise the cover PDF.
These are the authority on each printer's numbers. They suit authors and designers who will lay out the cover themselves.
What BookCovers.pro does differently
- One set of details, three templates. Enter the trim size (seven built in: 5×8, 5.5×8.5, 6×9, 6.14×9.21, 7×10, 8.5×8.5 and 8.5×11), page count and paper once. Templates for KDP, IngramSpark and Lulu are generated together and update when you change the specs.
- The cover is built for you. Upload a front cover you already have (PNG, JPG or WebP) or create one with AI, add the description, an optional author photo and bio, and the spine text. The tool lays them out on every template, with a clear barcode corner on each back cover.
- One download, every file. A single credit downloads paperback wrap PDFs for KDP and IngramSpark, a Lulu paperback PDF for books of 32 pages or more, hardcover case-laminate PDFs for KDP and IngramSpark (76 pages or more), an ebook cover JPEG and a 3000×3000 audiobook cover.
Already have an ebook cover? The ebook cover to print cover route turns it into the full wrap.
Prices
1 cover $24, 5 covers $99, 10 covers $179, 25 covers $379, 50 covers $629, 100 covers $1,129. Credit packs are one-time purchases, valid for two years, and the free account, design and proofs cost nothing.
Before you upload
BookCovers.pro delivers high-resolution RGB PDFs and 300 dpi PNGs at the exact full-wrap size and does not promise a particular PDF/X standard or colour profile. Printers' requirements change, so compare the file with your printer's current guidelines before submitting; IngramSpark's guidelines, for instance, list CMYK as the cover colour space. KDP and IngramSpark add the ISBN barcode themselves; Lulu does not add one to an uploaded cover, so place the barcode Lulu provides in the clear corner first.
